Using SmartMan - The Buttons

Most Buttons are toggles. This means that when you click on one it will open a window. Click on it again and the window will close.. A few of the buttons such as Menu and Quit execute an action and they happen right away.

Different Buttons appear depending on the context. Not all buttons appear in all products as it depends on the features which you have in your product.

THE MENUS

 

The Login Menu - This appears when you start the software.

The Main Menu -
This appears when you login or press the Menu Button from inside an Activity.

The Skills Set Menu -
This is a window that appears at the Main Menu. You use this window to select a skill and an Activity

The Buttons

Most Buttons are toggles. This means that when you click on one it will open a window. Click on it again and the window will close. A few of the buttons such as Menu and Quit execute an action and they happen right away.

Different Buttons appear depending on the context. Not all buttons appear in all products as it depends on the features which you have in your product.


Feedback Button

Toggle: This turns the feedback display On or Off.
This turns the SmartMan color real time feedback on and off. With the feedback turned off, the bars only indicate that the system is active and working but the bars are all the same light gray color. When the activity has finished the full color bars will display along with the score and the full results. This feature is a great way to test yourself to see if you have developed a proper feel for performing correctly.


Menu Button

Action: This takes you back to the Main Menu. This button appears when you are in any activity. If you click on this button when an activity is being performed, it will terminate the activity and return you to the Main Menu.


Help Button

Toggle: This is a toggle On/Off.
It is always available but the information displayed will change depending on whether you are at the Login Menu, the Main Menu or within and Activity. The general information provided explains how to get things done. It will NOT explain what is expected in this activity. Click on the Guide Button for information on that activity.


Quit Button

Action: The Exits the Program.
This is always located in the top right of the window and it is always available.


Pause Button

Toggle & Action: This is a toggle pause/unpause - when an activity is in progress this pauses the activity.
This Button appears in the Data Box within an Activity. It will change pause/unpause during the activity. This button is useful when a trainer decides to stop pause an activity to explain or re-emphasize a particular point. Once the point has been made, click the Pause/Unpause Button again and you can continue on in the activity.

This Button is only available for a Practice Activity. If you select a Test, it will not be displayed as a Button.

If you use pause during a practice, when looking at the results, if you press the Replay Button, the pause will be part of the replay.


Start Button

Action: Begins the Activity
When you go into an activity, you will see a large Green Start Button in the middle of the feedback area. Click on this to begin the activity.

If you press the SPACE BAR, it will do the same thing as clicking on the Start Button.


Restart Button

Action: This returns the current activity back to the Beginning of the Activity.
Clicking this button returns you to the beginning of the current activity and you will see the Start Button appear again. This will happen if you are at the end of an activity or if the activity is ongoing.

If you are in a hurry to have many people have a turn on SmartMan, when one person has completed their skills and seen their score, the next person simply has to press the Restart Button and then start to also perform the same activity. This can be repeated as often as you wish. The results from each activity will be saved in the name of this login.


Guide Button

Toggle: This opens and closes a window that explains what you are to do in this activity.
This Information is specific to the particular activity you are in at the time. It is always located in the top left of the window.


Chest Button

Toggle: This is will display a cut away of the chest or hide it again.
This displays a 3D model of the chest. It will respond as chest compressions are performed. You can rotate it and change the angle with the arrow keys.


Metronome

Toggle: This opens and closes the metronome window. This is an aid to help a student who is having trouble getting the rate of chest compression correct. It is only available during an activity which includes chest compressions. The window is able to be dragged and you are able to control the rate of the metronome.

It defaults to a rate of 110/ minute but the user can select from 80 to 140/per minute. This can be used to demonstrate how fast or how slow these other rates are.


Ventimeter Button

Toggle: This opens and closes the ventilations SIM window.
This displays a cylinder to show the flow of air into the lungs during a ventilation. It displays the rate and volume as well as the time that the air was flowing into the lungs.
This will be found in the Skills Set Menu under Tutor in the Ventilations Tutor Activity.


Airflow Button

Toggle: This will open and close a window which indicates how the air is flowing in and out of the lungs.
This display the inhalation, pause at maximum inhalation and exhalation of a breath. This clearly shows if the exhalation has been impeded by not quickly releasing the BVM.

This will be found in the Skills Set Menu under Tutor in the Ventilations Tutor Activity.

Results Button

Toggle: This displays or hides the results window.
You must be displaying the results of an activity for this to be available. This can be at the completion of an activity or it can be when viewing previous results. This is particularly useful if you want to show a summary and other details. You might need more space on screen.


Key Button

Toggle: This displays and hides a window which explains the SmartMan Colors
The Key Button gives a quick review of the SmartMan colors.


Previous Results Button

Action and Toggle: This opens and hides a window which gives you access to previous results performed on this computer.

Before you Login, this button gives you a quick display of the current user. If no user is active it will display the results of the Practice Session by default. In the window, click on the button to select results for Compressions, Ventilations, CPR and Adv CPR results. Click the button and the results for that skill will be displayed. If there are results, click on the one that you want and click on Select. The results will be fully displayed with the bars, summary and analysis. If there are no skills for that skill, the window will be empty. To close the window, click on the small X at the lower right of the window. You can hide the window by pressing the Previous Results Button again.

From the Main Menu, this button gives you all of the results of the current user ONLY. If you want the results of another user, either login as that person or at the Login Menu click on their login name and click the Previous Results Button. Once in the Results Window, you have the option to select Compressions, Ventilations, CPR and Adv CPR results. Simply click on the button and a lists of the results for that skill will be displayed. If there are results, click on the one that you want and click on Select. The results will be fully displayed with the bars, summary and analysis.


All Results Button

Action: This creates a list of all results on the computer and opens a window with these results showing.
This is available at the Login Menu and is a Trainer Function. It is on the right side of the window. The window shows all results. If you have thousands of results, it takes time to create this list. When the window opens, you have the option to display All Results, Comps, Vents, CPR, Code. You can also Export & View. This opens Excel with the results display and from here it is simple to produce a chart of the results.

This Button does not show full results of the file. It displays the name of the person logged in (that is the name of the login name associated with the activity performed, the percentage score, the date the activity was performed, and the comment.

There is an Export Data Button. This will create a csv file (comma delimited file) of the results which are displayed. A csv file can be opened directly in Excel so it is easy to convert this data into a chart of the results.


Comment Area

Feature: This allows you to save a comment about the current results. This is only available from within a set of results. The results can be displayed immediately upon completion of an activity or they might be viewed through the Previous Results Button. The comment area is accessed by clicking on the Summary Button. Add your comment in the space provided and then click on the Save Comment button. You must save the comment. You can change this comment and save it at any time. Only the most recent changes will be saved. The comment that is current is always displayed in the Summary Window. It is also produced in the results list created with the All Results Button. If you logged in as a Practice User, you might use the comment area to keep a record of people who performed.


Hands-Off Button

Toggle: This displays or hides a graph of hands-off time for the total activity
Hands-off time is the fraction of time when the hands are off of the chest. The At-A-Glance display also illustrates the effect of pauses or cessation of compressions. It shows the results of poor versus better compressions. For detail on the Hands-Off graph, download a one page pdf here.


Health Button

Toggle: This displays or hides the Health Status graph.
The health status of the patient is in response to the performance of and the quality of the CPR being performed. It is shown in real time as the activity progress. For detail on the Heath Status, download a one page pdf here.


Defibrillator Button

Action: In a code this will display the current heart rhythm for six seconds and it will record the use of the defibrillator in the code Log. This button will only display in a code. This is NOT a toggle, if you press it a second time, a second defibrillator event will be recorded in the Code Event Log. The heart rhythm which will be displayed can be changed at any time during the code before the defibrillator button is pressed. Select one of the heart rhythms before this button is clicked and that will be the rhythm that will be displayed. There are several ways to select a heart rhythm. 1) click on the rhythm button with your mouse; or
2) select the particular rhythm by using the keyboard shortcut. That letter is shown on the button in yellow; or 3) if using an external control and tablet, on the table click on the selected heart rhythm. To Display the Heart Rhythm
Click on the Monitor Button at the top of the window. This will display the currently selected rhythm. It will not be recorded in the Code Event Log.


Monitor Button

Toggle: This displays or hides the currently selected heart rhythm. It will only display during a code.
This will display the heart rhythm that was last selected. It will display the rhythm for 6 seconds. To turn it off before that, click on Monitor again. You can continue to perform skills during this time.

Clicking on the monitor button does NOT put the rhythm onto the Critical Event Log.

To display select a different heart rhythm, then click on monitor. There are several ways to select a heart rhythm. 1) click on the rhythm button with your mouse; or
2) select the particular rhythm by using the keyboard shortcut. That letter is shown on the button in yellow; or 3) if using an external control and tablet, on the table click on the selected heart rhythm.


Trainer Tools Button

Toggle: This displays or hides the Trainer Tools Menu. This is only available when you are at the Main Menu. The window can be dragged. Trainer Tools are specifically designed to help the trainer with various tasks. When logged in as any user there is a Trainer Tools Button on the right of the window. This opens a window with Login Tools, Results Tools and How To Tools.

Logins Tools - These tools allow you to make multiple logins at one time. Results Tools - These provide specific functions for the trainer. For example, you can create a zip file of all results on the local computer. You are then given the option to enter an email address and send the results. How To Tools - These will take you to the website and give you specific detailed steps to follow in order to achieve particular points. For example, how to create a chart from results; how to print a class list with names and scores.


Login Tools

These tools make a group of logins at once. For example if you want to create 10 logins that are all Fire Depart (Example Login FDOCT), type the name in the space, type a comma, type the password, click on check login. Then repeat on the next line. When you have finished, click on the "Create Logins" Button.
If you fail to put in a password, when you press the Check Login Button, it will enter the password 1234.
When you go to Login Next User, all of your logins will be displayed at the login window.


Online Results

Action and Toggle: This button is only available if the user has registered. It will only display from the results inside of an activity. This will display the ranking for the score of the current activity against those currently in the database. For this feature to be active, the login must be online. That is, at the Main Menu, the button must say, SmartMan is online.

If the results have not yet been sent to the server, click on the Online Results Button.

If the login is online when the results are completed, the results will be sent to the server automatically when the activity has completed and displayed the results. If the window is not open, click on the Online Results Button to show the ranking status of the results.

Update Tools

Action and Toggle: This will check to see if there is an update to the current version you are running. You must be connected to the internet for this


to check. If there is an update, it will give you the option of updating or not.


Bulk Registration Tools

When you create a login, it has not yet been registered. You do not have to register logins to use SmartMan. However, if you wish to register the logins, then this tool allows you to register a group of names at one time.

You must be connected to the internet to register.


Results Tools

By selecting this tool, all of the results on the local computer will be put into a zip file and sent to an email address. There is a space for you to name the file and to add an email address. Then click the Send Zip file Button. You must be connected to the internet for this to send the file.

If you are not connected to the internet when you press this button, if will create the zip and display the path where the file is located in the window.
